scuba diving certification
I’m thinking of using ear candling to relieve the pressure in my ears from scuba diving.?

I used to work at a pretty fancy salon a few years back, and they offered ear candling. It seemed harmless enough, and everyone I knew that had it done said it worked out great for them. Recently my husband and I got our scuba certification. Well, over 24 hours after the dive and my ears are still plugged.

I’ve been told to use Swimmers Ear or a mixture of alcohol and hydrogen peroxide to relieve the pressure and get my hearing back; but I was wondering if anyone out there had ever actually tried ear candling to relieve the pressure after scuba diving. All I can find on the internet are sites that are totally against the practice (stating the same incident with one person over and over again) or sites that sell ear candles or offer the service.

I was hoping to get an unbiased answer to weather or not ear candling will actually help my ear pressure or not.

In 20 plus years of diving, I have never come across a diver using ear candling to resolve this. Matter of fact, I’ve never heard of a diver using the method at all for anything. The tried and true of what you’ve mentioned has always worked for minor, non chronic conditions. If anything, I’d hit an ENT ( Ears Nose Throat) specialist. If it’s that bad, they can do an ear syringe to clear the blockage. Only takes a minute and no discomfort. Also, if there’s an underlying chronic problem he can spot it and advise you.
You either got in the situation you’re in by diving congested or not equalizing properly. Take your time equalizing ( it’s not a race, I know a diver that needs 5 minutes to punch past 15 feet) or call the dive if you’re stuffed up.
Edit: Just to make sure, I did a quick check with DAN and just as I thought, there are no articles on it at all. That means they’ve done no research on it or don’t condone it.
